This innovative course promotes a safe and healthy laboratory work environment, both in the classroom and in a business setting. It provides participants with an overview of safety and health issues in the laboratory, including applicable regulations, hazard definition, accident/hazard reduction, protective measures and proper disposition of waste. It provides a unique opportunity to improve laboratory and teaching practices and obtain 1 Continuing Education hour
(1 CEU) or 6-10 hours of noncredit renewal hours (as approved by individual’s Professional Development Council).
This course provides the essentials of laboratory safety compliance with the convenience of on line accessibility.

Ruth Schukman-Dakotas
Ruth Schukman-Dakotas was the director of the University of Kansas Medical Center Safety Office for 22 of the 28 years she was with the Medical Center. She is currently a radiation safety consultant through DTC, Inc., a consulting company based in the Kansas City area. She is also the regional coordinator for the K.C. area Kansas Regional Hospital Emergency Preparedness Committee. She has a bachelor's degree in physics and completed graduate work in radiation biophysics. Her responsibilities included developing and presenting laboratory safety courses. She has taught safety and emergency response - related courses locally and regionally.
Marion Mealey-Ferrara
Marion has over 12 years experience in the fields of science/safety as both a laboratory researcher and/or a safety officer. She has worked at the academic, corporate, state and federal levels and has sat on a number of institutional research safety boards/committees. Her duties have included managing a select agent program, overseeing overall lab safety, conducting inspections, designing safety SOPs , table-top disaster exercises and safety training. She is a former adjunct professor of biology and a current graduate teaching assistant and safety trainer. She has completed extensive government emergency response training and is a certified instructor in incident response to terrorist bombings. She holds a master's degree in biology from Harvard University and a master's certificate in forensic DNA analysis from University of Florida. Currently, she is pursuing her Ph,D. at the University of Kansas in biological anthropology. Marion is the safety officer for the Mass Fatality Region VII Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team (DMORT) as well as for Clinical Reference Lab, a large Kansas-based diagnostic testing facility.
The last day to enroll in the current session will close on October 17, but the course completion date is October 31, 2008. Online course content will not be available after this date.
